The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience instead of another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a specific type of character with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
